Jules Cartier
My work originates in an interrogation of reality in its most trivial sense: I question what I live, read, see... At first, my practice takes the form of a gathering of heterogeneous elements. This material then allows me to compose multi-layered assemblages that disregard hierarchies and boundaries between the cultural worlds I engage with. My assemblages can in turn be incorporated and linked within installations and staged situations.
My practice, fundamentally profane, is not confined to a single medium, and can at times resemble a form of curating.
Since my work starts from observation and gleaning, it is by definition anchored in a material reality from which it does not seek to escape. The questions of labour, social failure, our living conditions and the parameters that shape them are therefore central to it.
